Hogan prevents Denton from leasing his loft

rawortonYou are probably familiar with the scandal Hulk Hogan was involved in regarding the sex tape featuring him having sex with the wife of a radio shock jock. Hogan, or to be more precise, Mr. Terry Bollea (his real name) sued the founder of Gawker Media LLC Nick Denton and the editor who published the video. Denton and former editor A.J. Daulerio were found jointly liable for $115 million while Denton himself has to pay $10 million. The total damages awarded to Bollea make a total of $140 million.

Denton said he can’t pay the judgment thus filing for personal bankruptcy. His assets consist in 30% of Gawker shares, worth $30 million and his loft worth an additional $4.25 million. He then tried to lease the loft for $12,500 a month but this does not cover the amount owed. Therefore, the court denied the lease and Denton has to sell his apartment.

Since then, $135 worth of Gawker shares were sold to Univision Communications Inc. Their plans are to merge several sites into the Fusion Media Group: Gizmodo, Lifehacker, Deadspin, Jalopnik, Jezebel and Kotaku. The Gawker site shut down on August 22nd, 13 years after its first time online.

Hogan is now threatening Gawker with a second lawsuit for leaking the wrestler’s racist comments in a transcript of one of his sex tapes. He is suing for tortious interference and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Gawker obviously denies having any involvement in the leaks of these comments.
